What is health coaching?

Most of us have either hired a personal trainer or at least thought about doing so to help us reach our fitness goals. So why not do the same with your health?

Health coaching is hugely popular in the US and Australia but a relatively new style of coaching in South Africa.

The role of a health coach is to support and guide you to become the best healthy version of yourself. As a health coach, I focus on both your primary and secondary nutritional needs.  Your primary food being your career, finances, relationships, physical activity and spirituality and your secondary food, the actual food on your plate.

Have you ever noticed that it doesn’t matter how much kale you eat, if you hate your job, it’s almost impossible to drop the last few kg’s, to get rid of your eczema or solve those nagging digestive issues.  Yes, it’s important to have a healthy diet but let’s be real, you have to address your primary food if you are going to live a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.

What are your relationships like?  Do you love what you do?  What are you passionate about?  Do you feel like you’re living your purpose?  What is your mood like most days?  Could you have hormone imbalances? Are you tired all the time?  Do you sleep well?  Do you make time for self-care?  Are you part of a supportive community?  Do you love your body?  Do you love your life?

These are all critical questions we need to ask ourselves and if not addressed, can stand in the way of your health.

The role of a health coach is to support and guide you to become the best healthy version of yourself.  In the same way a personal trainer gives you accountability, encouragement, motivation and guidance to achieve your fitness goals, health coaches do the same to achieve your health goals.  As health coach I studied highly effective coaching techniques to help you find the right lifestyle that works best for you.

A health coach is not a dietician, medical doctor or phycologist.  A dietician would typically only focus on your secondary food. A medical doctor would treat your symptoms and focus very little on either your primary or secondary food.  A phycologist would only focus on your primary food.  Even though all these practitioners play an important role in our lives,  a health coach is critical in your road to, not only transform your life but also become the best healthy version of yourself.

As health coach, I’m am trained in over 100 dietary theories.  So many of us are confused about what’s right and wrong for us,  whether carbs are good or bad, is it okay to be a vegan or does my body need animal protein, do I need to eat 6 small meals per day or is it okay to have only 3.  And then what about intermittent fasting?  We all have different needs and I will teach and guide you to listen to your body and to understand what it needs.  We will go beyond what you should be eating and why.  We will create a safe and non-judgemental space for you to focus holistically on your health.

Together we’ll come up with an individualised, practical and easy to follow plan to optimise your health.  The aim is for you to not only meet your personal health goals but to thrive and live the best possible life.

I’m not talking about a quick fix here, it’s a journey and I would be honoured to walk besides you.
