Healthy tomato sauce – refined sugar free

Tomato sauce is such a staple in most households.  Conventional store bought tomato sauce contains a little bit of tomato and a lot of cane sugar, preservatives and other artificial ingredients.  Our healthy tomato sauce is wholesome and delicious with no added refined sugar or preservatives.    Sweetened with a few dates to keep the kids happy, this will always be a staple in our house. Add a few chopped chillies for a delicious sweet chilli sauce.

A healthy, delicious and wholesome alternative to store-bought tomato sauce - with no added refined sugar.

Ingredients
  • 1 box / tin crushed tomatoes - check label for nasty ingredients
  • 1 small red onion chopped
  • 2 - 3 large garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp coconut aminos (optional)
  • 1 tsp chopped thyme or basil
  • 4 medjool dates
Directions
  • Step 1 Cover the dates with a little hot water and let it sit for 5 min.
  • Step 2 With a handheld blender, whizz the dates and water into a date paste.
  • Step 3 Combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan and cook for 30 – 45 minute on a low to medium heat.
  • Step 4 Add a bit of water until your reach the desired consistency – keeping in mind that the sauce will reduce and thicken while cooking.
  • Step 5 Season with salt and black pepper and pour the tomato sauce into a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Step 6 Store in a glass bottle in the fridge for up to a week.
