Super food chocolate energy balls – gluten, wheat, and refined sugar free

I make these super food chocolate energy balls at least once a week.  Both my daughter and hubby adore them.  They are great for an energy boost before an intense training session.  My daughter has them as a snack before hockey and netball practice and sometimes as a treat.  Not only do they taste great but they also contain super food like chia seeds, hempseed oil and flaxseed oil. Be careful, they are high in calories, but so worth it.

Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, rich in antioxidants and provide fibre, iron and calcium.

Hemp seed oil is an excellent source of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids and rich in antioxidants.  It is packed with minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and calcium.

Flaxseed oil contains 50% – 60% omega-3 fatty acids.  Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to health and have been associated with benefits like reduced inflammation, improved hearth health and protection of the brain against aging.

By:

Ingredients
  • 1 cup almond flour (for gluten free) OR ½ cup almond flour and ½ cup oats
  • 1 tbsp protein powder (we used Wazoogles' chocolate flavour superfood protein shake)
  • 1 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • pinch of salt
  • ⅓ cup nut butter (we used almond butter)
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 1 tsp hempseed oil
  • 1 tsp flaxseed oil
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
Directions
  • Step 1 In a blender, mix together the almond flour, oats (if using), protein powder, cocoa, chia seeds and salt. Blend until fine.
  • Step 2 Add nut butter, vanilla, hempseed oil, flaxseed oil and maple syrup. Blend until completely combined and smooth.
  • Step 3 Roll into balls between your hands. If the dough becomes sticky, wet your hands slightly.
  • Step 4 Place balls on a tray lined with parchment paper in the freezer.
  • Step 5 Store in the fridge or freezer (we prefer freezer) in an airtight container, layered with parchment paper.
  • Step 6 The balls are delicious when frozen and should ideally be kept cool if packed in lunch boxes.
